About this role

At BlackRock, technology is central to our mission, and our team continues to drive innovation across the industry. We value curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to experiment to tackle complex problems. Here, you’ll experience a collaborative environment where teamwork happens across departments, regions, and specialties. BlackRock is dedicated to your professional growth as a technologist, offering tailored learning resources, tech‑focused career paths, and access to global experts and leaders.

Team background

The Data Management team builds and operates the core systems that enable our researchers to efficiently capture, manage, and maintain high‑quality Private Markets data. Our work underpins critical research and product workflows across the firm, replacing legacy platforms with modern, scalable services and improving data quality, auditability, and accessibility.

We are responsible for Cura, a suite of researcher‑facing applications and backend services that act as the system of record for key Private Markets entities and datasets. The team works closely with Product, Research, and Data partners to evolve Cura in line with business needs, while maintaining high engineering standards and a strong focus on reliability, performance, and maintainability.

The role

As an Associate, Software Engineer on the Data Management team, you’ll join an engineering pod responsible for building and evolving the platforms that researchers use to manage Private Markets data. Your work will focus on delivering robust, scalable systems that support complex data models, validation rules, and downstream integrations.

You’ll contribute across the full development lifecycle, from design and implementation through to testing, release, and ongoing support. Collaboration is central to the role: you’ll work closely with other engineers, product managers, and data owners to design solutions that balance technical excellence with real‑world usability, and you’ll play an active role in shaping the team’s technical direction.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, implementing, and maintaining robust backend and frontend systems that support researcher workflows and data management use cases.
  • Building and evolving APIs and services that distribute data to internal consumers and external integrations, with a strong focus on correctness, auditability, and performance.
  • Collaborating with engineers across the organisation to drive adoption of shared patterns and raise engineering standards through code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
  • Actively contributing to technical discussions around data modelling, system architecture, and platform evolution to ensure solutions remain scalable and adaptable over time.
  • Supporting the gradual decommissioning of legacy systems by delivering well‑tested, production‑ready replacements.

What we are looking for:

  • 4+ years’ experience in software engineering, working on production systems.
  • Strong technical ability across the full stack, including modern web applications, backend services, and APIs. Python and .NET experience is beneficial.
  • Experience working with relational and non‑relational databases, including designing schemas and writing performant queries.
  • Experience building and running systems in the cloud (AWS or Azure), including use of infrastructure as code (Terraform).
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • A solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including testing, version control, and CI/CD practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to a range of stakeholders.
  • A proactive, “challenge accepted” mindset, with curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies and ways of working.

Our benefits

To help you stay energized, engaged and inspired, we offer a wide range of benefits including a strong retirement plan, tuition reimbursement, comprehensive healthcare, support for working parents and Flexible Time Off (FTO) so you can relax, recharge and be there for the people you care about.
