Overall Job Purpose

As a colleague within Cloud Platform Operations, you will be part of a team driving M&G’s Core Cloud Platform. Facing off to the entire M&G organisation as a central IT function: we own, develop, and operate M&G’s core cloud infrastructure; supporting projects and business users to bring their workloads into the Cloud. We also develop and manage key Enterprise Engineering Platforms and Tools such as Apigee (API Management), Azure DevOps, M&G’s Enterprise Container Platform, M&G’s Data Science & Machine Learning Platforms and many more.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities

We are looking to expand our team through M&G Global Services to continue to provide the highest levels of service to our end users. The Platform Operations team works to high standards within our growing business by managing critical platforms, running our Azure estate, and supporting our engineering teams drive business value in technology.

The team support our UK business with extended support for Asia Pacific regions. This means working flexible hours to meet our business needs. Currently split across three geographies and supported by a technology partner we stand by having a one team feel and regularly collaborate and work together to meet the common goals. The Platform Operations team is the centre of all things cloud. The team will keep our cloud infrastructure and platforms running, maintained and be empowered to improve, automate and drive the future of this estate.

No two days are the same for our engineers in this evolving area, they will be supported closely by our engineers who provide L2 and L3 support, utilising their expertise to solve complex issues across a variety of technologies. Our L3 engineers are skilled in everything from containers to API management, Azure to OCI (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure) and our platform operations engineers will have opportunity work closely with them to learn a broad range of technologies.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Educational Qualification

We always support colleagues to develop their skills but to be successful in this role the following will be required by our Senior Engineers:

• Minimum of 5+ years of experience in your discipline and working the IT industry
• You will have in-depth experience as a hands-on IT Engineer, with strong knowledge on different cloud technologies and platforms, experience with Azure is essential.
• You will understand cloud governance, best practices, and policies within Azure
• You must have a problem-solving mindset and the ability to troubleshoot unknown technical issues
• Previous experience working in a support team is highly desirable.
• Proven experience in identifying inefficiencies and implementing automated solutions to overcome these
• As a senior engineer you will be expected to help build out our presence in M&G Global Services and as such experience of building / mentoring and guiding teams and individuals is essential
• Proven experience in building relationships with team members and other colleagues across a business
• An understanding of inventory management and software assurance, alongside CMDB and /or other asset management tooling
• Experience dealing, co-ordinating and responding to major incidents
• Familiarity with Agile and DevOps methodologies and technologies – Git, Azure DevOps (or equivalent) and CI / CD Pipelines
• Relevant cloud and/or technology discipline certification especially – AZ-104
• Scripting in your relevant discipline and/or within Cloud Automation
• An understanding of Patching in a Cloud / IAAS estate

• Applicants must be fluent in both verbal and written English to communicate with our business users and stakeholders

As a database expert we expect the following across both IAAS and PAAS:

• Experience managing SQL Server databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems especially in a cloud environment
• Experience configuring and maintaining database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security.
• Experience in troubleshooting and resolving OS (Windows), software, network, and security problems.
• Ability to independently analyze, solve, and correct issues in real time and provide end-to-end problem resolution.
• Ability to refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document changes
• Ability to assist developers with complex query tuning and schema refinement.
• Experience with support for critical production systems.
• Experience with disaster recovery / backup & restore processes
• Ability to share domain and technical expertise, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to other peers and team members.

Experience with the below is preferable:

• Certifications in relevant IT domains
• Managing access, governance, and Security Configuration Baselines in a windows environment. With an understanding of GPO and privileged access.
• An understanding of other data query languages e.g PL/SQL, Oracle SQL, PostgreSQL
• Understanding / experience of automation & configuration tooling such as Ansible

Educational Qualification:

• Graduate/Masters in any discipline
• Min 5+ years of MS SQL experience
• Cloud certifications would be an added advantage
