The Role: M&G Life covers over 5 million customers with more than £300 Bn invested across all of its products and wrappers, and has an ambitious growth plan for 2025 and beyond. M&G Life operations work with a number of partners including Equiniti, Diligenta, Waystone, Paragon, Willis Towers Watson, as well as M&G Global Services supporting our in-house operation.
The Programme Manager is responsible for the hands-on leadership and successful delivery of a combination of operational improvement projects and large-scale transformation initiatives within a defined portfolio. Acting as a role model for relentless delivery focus, the Programme Manager leads a team of Project Managers, ensuring high standards of execution, accountability, and stakeholder engagement. This role is pivotal in translating strategic direction from the Portfolio Director into tangible delivery outcomes, with full ownership of delivery artefacts and reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the end-to-end delivery of multiple projects and programmes, ensuring alignment with portfolio objectives and relentless focus on execution.
Set the standard for delivery excellence, acting as a hands-on leader who resolves issues, removes blockers, and drives progress.
Line manage and develop Project Managers, providing day-to-day direction, coaching, and (where appropriate) formal performance management.
Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels, supporting the Portfolio Director in both governance forums (e.g. SteerCo) and day-to-day delivery meetings.
Own all delivery artefacts, including RAID logs, dashboards, reporting packs, and ensure their accuracy, timeliness, and completeness.
Prepare and present delivery updates in governance forums, representing the delivery team and escalating risks/issues as required.
Apply and coach best practice delivery methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, hybrid), adapting approaches to suit project needs.
Foster a culture of accountability, challenge, and continuous improvement within the delivery team.
Support benefits tracking and realisation in partnership with PMO and portfolio leadership.
Champion the use of delivery tools (Jira highly desirable) and promote data-driven decision-making.
Key Skills and Experience:
Proven experience as a Project Manager (essential), with a track record of delivering complex projects or programmes.
Experience leading and developing teams, with the ability to provide both day-to-day direction and formal line management (where required).
Hands-on expertise in delivery methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, hybrid) and ability to coach others in best practice.
Strong stakeholder management skills, with confidence engaging both senior leaders and delivery teams.
Relentless focus on delivery, execution, and “getting the job done”.
Experience preparing and owning delivery artefacts and reporting for governance forums.
General delivery expertise across a range of project types; experience in financial services or regulated environments is advantageous but not essential.
Proficiency with delivery tools (Jira highly desirable)
Qualifications
Degree-level education or equivalent experience.
Project management certification (e.g. PRINCE2, AgilePM, PMP) desirable.
