The Fixed Income Division is comprised of Commodities, Interest Rate and Currency Products, Credit Products and Distribution. Professionals in the Division assess and actively manages risk, trade securities, and structure as well as execute innovative transactions in the fast-paced and constantly changing global markets.
The Commodities Department, with 200+ front office employees, is a market leader in energy, metals, and agricultural product trading worldwide whose professionals trade in both physical and derivative commodity risk. North American Power and Gas (NAPG) trades physical and financial power and gas in United States and Canada. NAPG creates and manages structured transactions in duration of one to twenty plus years. NAPG manages resources and provides load-following services, buys and sells tolls and other risk management needs for municipals, commercial and industrial load, load aggregators, independent power producers and renewable generation developers.
This role is for an Analyst/Associate on the NAPG Origination desk within the Commodities department, based in New York.
A successful candidate would be able to develop a deep understanding of market structure, fundamentals, and client flows within the NAPG markets. The candidate would work closely with the origination team in most aspects of their business for clients as well as being market-facing and negotiating transactions directly with clients.
Additionally, the candidate would work closely with sales and origination team to facilitate client business and specific tasks will include:
Working directly with clients to understand their energy needs and develop solutions to support client transactions
Working with internal key-decision-makers to identify value-additive commercial opportunities to support client business
Establish and maintain new client relationships to drive value behind the existing Morgan Stanley NAPG platform
Day-to-day support of structured power products and flow trades.
Developing external pitch books and generating trade ideas
Assisting in trade execution process including trade booking, new issue order taking and general sales back-up across the desk
Developing cash flow models and presentations to assist with credit requests
Assessing credit risk of major projects originated by senior members of the team
Running deal metrics for transactions including market risk and counterparty risk calculations
Perform related duties and participate in special projects as required
Working with numerous internal teams: other sales, trading desks (natural gas/oil/metals), investment bankers, credit, legal and mid/back/administrative office staff
Requirements:
a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
0-5 years of experience, commodity Sales, Trading, Origination, Structuring, or Investment Banking
Strong financial modelling competency
Strong numeracy skills, intimate understanding of accounting concepts, financial statements, cashflows and corporate finance valuation.

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $110,000 and $125,000 per year commencement of employment for Analyst, and between $150,000 and $200,000 per year commencement of employment for Associate. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
