Director - Institutional Equity Risk

Neuberger Berman is seeking a Director of Equity Investment Risk to join the New York office, reporting to the Global Head of Investment Risk. This person will oversee key risk management initiatives and partner closely with our global risk colleagues. The Risk department is a dynamic, fast-paced team responsible for navigating complex challenges that impact the firm and its business.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in portfolio construction and risk analysis, with a proven ability to apply advanced analytical skills and deep market insights. A successful track record of engaging with portfolio manager and senior executives is essential, as is a demonstrated ability to drive innovation and critical thinking within risk frameworks. This role also requires a strong leader who can foster collaboration and top performance within the team.
Primary Responsibilities:
Oversee active risk monitoring for global equity long-only and long-short portfolios, applying a critical and forward-thinking approach to portfolio risk profiles, construction, return analyses, scenario planning, and liquidity risk assessments.
Prepare and present risk reports for relevant strategies to portfolio managers, senior leaders and Internal Committees; identify and escalate key issues as appropriate.
Build and maintain strong relationships with portfolio managers and senior leadership, clearly communicating risk insights in context of fast evolving and competitive markets and addressing escalations effectively
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes and objectives
Lead and manage a team of risk professionals, providing mentorship, fostering professional growth.
Promote a collaborative team environment that aligns with the firm’s culture and values.
Work effectively within cross-functional teams, leveraging diverse perspectives to enhance decision-making and drive innovation in processes and analyses.
Utilize advanced risk and attribution modeling techniques to assess portfolio construction, activity trends, and tail risks under various scenarios.
Key Qualifications:
Minimum of 15 years in financial services with primary focus in asset management. Exposure to both sell-side and buy-side environments is highly desirable.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline. Deep expertise in advanced risk and attribution modeling techniques is required with hands-on experience using industry standard tools such as BlackRock Aladdin, Barra, and Axioma.
Exceptional analytical and quantitative skills, complemented by strong written and verbal communication skills.
Working knowledge of US regulatory requirements and risk management standards
High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook) ; experience with coding languages such as Python and/or SQL is preferred. Interest in leveraging advanced data and learning technologies (e.g. AI, Snowflake) is a plus.
Professional certifications such as FRM or CFA is strongly recommended.

Compensation Details
The salary range for this role is $190,000-$230,000. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. This range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in the job posting location. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, business sector, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, market benchmarking data, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs. This job is also eligible for a discretionary bonus, which, along with base salary and retirement contributions, is part of our total comprehensive package. We offer a comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off, medical/dental/vision insurance, 401(k), life insurance and other benefits to eligible employees.Note: No amount of pay is considered to be wages or compensation until such amount is earned, vested, and determinable.
