Job Summary

The Manager for Data Management is a critical leadership role within the Enterprise Data function at Northern Trust. This position focuses on enabling and improving data management capabilities across the organization, overseeing tools, processes, and governance frameworks. The role combines strategic planning, operational execution, and team leadership to deliver enterprise-level data management solutions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership

  • Manage a team of consultants, senior consultants, and specialists.
  • Oversee hiring, performance reviews, compensation decisions, and career development.
  • Foster collaboration, communication, and engagement within the team.

2. Capability Implementation

  • Implement and maintain enterprise data management tools and solutions.
  • Drive adoption of Metadata, Data Lineage, and Data Quality frameworks.
  • Establish reporting and tracking for data governance metrics.

3. Governance & Change Management

  • Develop and execute communication and change management plans for new tools or processes.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to define policies, standards, and frameworks.
  • Lead complex initiatives involving multiple disciplines.

4. Strategic Planning

  • Contribute to division-level strategic planning and goal setting.
  • Ensure objectives are met through effective execution and monitoring.

5. Problem Solving & Impact

  • Address technical and operational challenges with a broad organizational perspective.
  • Influence service quality and timeliness through policy-driven decisions.

6. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with business units to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity.

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience:
    • 16–20 years in Data Governance/Data Management or related fields
    • Experience in the Banking or Financial Industry
    • 5–6 years in leadership roles managing professional teams.
    • College degree in Engineering and or Management
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Deep understanding of data governance principles and frameworks (BCBS239, GDPR, RDARR etc.)
    • Proficiency in Reporting, Metadata, Data Lineage, and Data Quality solutions.
  • Leadership & Communication:
    • Strong organizational and communication skills.
    • Ability to set goals, allocate resources, and develop staff.
  • Project Management:
    • Skilled in managing complex, cross-functional projects.
  • Adaptability:
    • Comfortable in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
  • Influence:
    • Ability to guide and influence stakeholders toward new perspectives.
