Northern Trust Job Description

Consultant Role:

SUMMARY: The role is within Depositary Operations helping to ensure that Northern Trust fulfills its oversight responsibilities under the UCITS and Alternative Investment Fund Management Directive (AIFMD).
The primary responsibilities will be in area of Valuation oversight and Investment Compliance – ensuring that the fund’s investment policies are in line with appropriate regulations based on fund type and domicile, and the fund prospectus.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Ongoing monitoring of all regulatory (COLL & AIFMD) and Fund specific requirements for AFMs on a daily/periodic basis; ensuring the delivery of effective compliance monitoring/compliance monitoring plans
  • Qualitative asset eligibility assessments (equities, bonds, structured products, derivatives and various corporate events)
  • Other risk-related analysis such as liquidity monitoring, derivative exposure and fair value pricing
  • Assistance with ongoing developments to Depositary risk management frameworks for industry topics (e.g. ESG, SDR)
  • Assistance with Fund Oversight review of scheme launch and change events
  • Build and maintain both external and internal relationships including offshore locations, AFM equivalents, senior managers and key contacts within delegates
  • Support the Depositary due diligence visits on topics such as investment compliance monitoring, liquidity monitoring, fair value pricing oversight and production of associated reports
  • Maintaining KPIs, developing and maintaining KPIs for offshore locations and presentation of MI on an ongoing basis
  • Consulting closely with the Depositary Operations Managers and Project Manager to integrate new clients onto the Northern platform e.g. FundWare.
  • Take lead in migrating Depositary Operations stablish the processes.
  • Operate as a “Subject Matter Expert” in Investment Compliance Monitoring process.
  • Expert level knowledge on monitoring tool such as Charles river, MiG21, Aladdin including “Rules Writing”
  • Working closely with Automation CoE to identify opportunity to improve process by developing new Macros or RPA technology.
  • Dealing with the data discrepancies at source and timely escalation & resolutions of major issues.
  • Ensuring fund rules are accurately recorded within the compliance engine or where manual checks are performed.
  • Dealing with all exceptions, investigating the investment breaches and resolving all the inadvertent breaches.
  • Communicating all the true investment breaches to the Country Depositary for action and continuing to monitor all investment breaches to conclusion.
  • Setting up of new funds into the compliance system.
  • Setting up investment guidelines or test rules within the system for performing the compliance check.
  • Perform quality checks/secondary review to ensure accuracy of the reports.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of Depositary duties and responsibilities
  • Knowledge of fund products and operating structures, investment strategies and asset classes
  • Knowledge and understanding of the FCA regulations for Funds and Depositary responsibilities
  • Previous relevant risk management or compliance experience preferred but not essential
  • Efficient in MS Office tools
  • Effective communication and relationship management skills
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to work both individually and as part of a Team
  • Good interpersonal and time management skills
  • Very strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, with internal and external clients.
  • Exposure to Project Management will be an added advantage.
  • Comfortable acting as lead person in discussions with other NT offices/functions.
  • Ability to work independently and create solutions to business challenges
  • Ability to understand and deal with complex issues and make recommendations for appropriate course of action.
  • The successful candidate will also demonstrate the following skills:
    • A technical expert with in-depth knowledge in area of expertise and strong knowledge of EU regulations e.g. AIFMD and UCITS.
    • Shows strong judgment in the ability to formulate plans based on needs and leadership styles of key leaders.
    • Able to influence all levels of the organisation, particularly senior leaders.
    • Strong project management capabilities.
    • Excellent communication, marketing, relationship, facilitation and motivational skills.
    • Self-starter and team player.
    • Attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently, while escalating complex issues.
    • Executes efficiently and effectively.
    • Leadership and organisational skills are essential to prioritise assignments and provide feedback to staff.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge of asset types and asset management.
  • 6-9 years of experience in fund services, preferably in financial services, accounting, auditing etc.
  • Third level qualification and/or advanced in professional studies.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory requirements for European region particularly Irish, Luxembourg and UK funds (Preferred).
  • Experience in handling large volume of data and reviewing the work of others.
  • Testing of systems changes and managing change in general.

Eligibility for Internal Partner

•24 months as a Technical Coordinator/Associate Consultant to move as a Team Leader/ Consultant.
•Movement within TL and Consultant is 12 months
