The Role

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, we are seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead the financial control function within a globally systemic important bank (G-SIB). The Controller will play a critical role in overseeing financial reporting, internal controls, accounting policy, regulatory reporting and compliance, and global consolidation activities across multiple jurisdictions. This role is pivotal in ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of the bank’s financial statements, and in supporting executive leadership with data-driven insights to inform strategic decisions. The ideal candidate will have deep technical expertise, a strong understanding of global regulatory frameworks, and proven leadership in complex, matrixed environments. The Controller will also play a highly visible leadership role in cross-functional strategic initiatives, partnering and working closely with the senior management team, business line leaders and functional finance leadership team. Through close collaboration with the leadership team, the Controller will play a vital role in shaping the executing the accounting function’s organizational structure, processes and capabilities to support a fast growing, complex and highly regulated business.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee the preparation of timely, accurate, and compliant financial statements and SEC filings (including Forms 10-Q, 10-K, 8-K, Proxy statements, and debt offerings) in accordance with IFRS/US GAAP and applicable regulatory standards.

  • Serve as the principal authority on interpretation and implementation of new accounting standards and policies. Provide technical guidance and ensure consistent application of GAAP, IFRS and other relevant standards.

  • Ensure effective financial close processes and the integrity of the general ledger and subsidiary ledgers across global operations.

  • Drive enhancements in financial systems, reporting automation, and operational efficiency, leveraging artificial intelligence and robotic process automation wherever possible to minimize manual inputs and human error

  • Ensure compliance with international financial regulations including Basel III, BCBS 239, and jurisdiction-specific reporting standards.

  • Liaise with internal and external auditors, regulators, and supervisory authorities, managing all audit and examination processes.

  • Work effectively with the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors, providing advice and counsel and reporting and communicating with them, as appropriate, on vital issues.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor robust internal controls and financial policies to mitigate risk and safeguard assets.

  • Lead enterprise-wide SOX (or equivalent) compliance efforts and ensure control frameworks are continuously reviewed and strengthened.

  • Partner with the CFO and executive leadership to deliver strategic insights through financial analysis and forecasting.

  • Provide oversight of legal entity control and intercompany accounting for global subsidiaries.

  • Work closely with business unit leaders and finance executives, communicating the accounting and finance implications of proposed transactions and other strategic decisions on the business.

  • Lead or contribute to major finance transformation initiatives, including system upgrades, process redesign, or M&A integration.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing global financial control team.

  • Formulate and execute a location strategy for the accounting and controllership team that enhances quality while optimizing cost, ideally leveraging past experience offshoring accounting and controllership processes and functions.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Ensure operational risk management by establishing and monitoring an effective oversight framework to ensure that issues are appropriately identified escalated and resolved. This includes: a) ensuring that appropriate management information is received, considered, and challenged as appropriate at intervals proportionate to the risks; and b) that staff members have clear understanding of the escalation path/principles.

  • Establish and nurture a culture of ‘Risk Excellence’ within the team, encouraging an environment of openness that welcomes effective challenge and supports open discussion.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be an experienced financial professional with the following skills and experiences:

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in financial control or accounting within a major financial institution, preferably a G-SIB or large multinational bank. Sitting Chief Accounting Officers and Controllers are preferred, but consideration will be given to deputy accounting leaders with a combination of relevant technical accounting, regulatory reporting, scaled team leadership, and business unit controllership experience.
  • Strong experience with global consolidation, financial reporting standards, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Deep expertise in IFRS, US GAAP, and global regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong proficiency in financial systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Hyperion) and data management tools.
  • Understanding of financial products including derivatives, loans, structured finance, and capital markets instruments.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills necessary to coordinate cross-geographic/function team and associated control functions (ERM, Compliance, Legal) and business partners.
  • Exceptional leadership and team-building abilities.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to interact effectively at senior executive and board levels.
  • Proven track record of leading complex financial operations across multiple geographies.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • CPA, CA, or equivalent international accounting qualification required.

Salary Range:

$300,000 - $412,500 Annual
