Global SSIM ETF Business

As the industry pioneer of the global ETF market, SSIM launched the first US listed ETF in 1993 (SPDR S&P 500) and has remained on the forefront of responsible innovation, evidenced by the introduction of many ground-breaking products, including first-to-market launches with gold, international real estate, international fixed income, and sector ETFs. SSIM has almost $1.5 Trillion in global ETF assets.

Purpose of Role:

The Capital Markets Specialist will be primarily responsible for supporting our strategic business development work by enhancing our account management framework with Capital Markets Group Partners to strengthen current relationships and expand coverage within the Broker Dealer and Exchange communities. In addition, the Capital Markets Specialist will be responsible for researching and developing project-driven initiatives, creating thought leadership, and fielding business inquiries from clients and internal stakeholders. This position is a client facing role, working closely with Intermediary and Institutional Sales to cover all client segments; including asset owners, asset managers, wealth managers and private banks, platforms and others.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Major contributor for projects and working groups related to APAC (focus on Japan) market structure advocacy, regulatory engagement, and ETF ecosystem improvements
  • Perform ETF Primary and Secondary Market processes including Japan.
  • Provide support for the ongoing maintenance of account plans for broker dealers and Exchange partners – assist in the execution of priorities to support SSIM ETF business, expand touch points with top broker dealer partners
  • Drive expansion of coverage to Japanese Broker Dealer accounts – assessing needs of SSIM ETF business, identifying partnership opportunities, establishing strategic account plans
  • Assist in ensuring support from the Broker Dealer and Exchange communities for SSIM ETF priorities as it relates to market making, distribution, and product innovation and enhancements

Internal Partnerships

  • Deliver risk excellence and support the business as a whole through internal and external relationship development
  • Collaborate with teams across SSIM and other State Street business divisions to represent APAC ETF Capital Markets Group, especially in Japan.
  • Facilitate an understanding of the Global SSIM ETF business and its strategy and priorities across key internal partners
  • Specific to the SSIM ETF Business, you will work collaboratively with:
    • Product Oversight and Operations
    • Investment Management and Portfolio Managers
    • Legal and Compliance
    • Product Development and Strategy
    • ETF Sales Strategy
    • Distribution

Client Segment

Client, Broker Dealer and Exchange coverage:

  • End-clients
    • Assist clients with trading and liquidity related queries, including pre- and post-trade analysis, Due Diligence Questionnaires and pricing indications
    • Work with Execution Services Senior Lead to develop an end-to-end client coverage model strategy
    • Produce trading and liquidity reports with a heavy emphasis on data analysis
    • Analyse market structure developments and changes to assist the wider SSIM ETF business strategy
  • Broker Dealers
    • ETF Sales & Trading, Equity Portfolio Sales & Trading, FICC Sales & Trading, and where applicable, Equity Derivative Sales & Trading and Prime Brokerage
    • Regional and Global Relationship Management teams
  • Exchanges
    • Business development teams
    • ETF listings teams
    • Regulatory Affairs and Market Structure teams

Your Ideal experience:

  • Exposure to the ETF industry (Sales and Trading, ETF servicing and project management), preferably from large financial institution, preferably within an international or multinational organization
  • Business analyst or project-based background, which includes running ETF-related projects
  • Capital markets knowledge with a good understanding of buy-side workflows for at least one asset class
  • Proficient with Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Bloomberg.
  • Communicating across multiple stakeholder groups with strong written and verbal communication skills in both English and Japanese
  • You should have the aptitude to think and act globally, harmonizing global, regional and local objectives. A developed sense of judgment and the ability to balance business needs in an objective and practical way is critical

Personal Profile:

The ideal candidate will have relevant technical and education requirements :

  • Bachelor’s degree of Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering or a similar field
  • 2 - 7 years of experience in the financial services industry, with Japanese ETF industry background.
  • Early‑career professional with 1–2 years of hands‑on experience in a global business environment are also welcomed to apply.
  • Background experience in the ETF/project management/sales trading preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of ETF mechanics – create/redeem process, fees, ETF clearing and settlement operations, custody preferred.
  • Enthusiasm for the industry, a positive attitude, and a drive to succeed
  • Ability to learn quickly and demonstrate industry and product knowledge.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with ability to frame business issues and apply data analysis to support strategic decision-making
  • Ability to build relationships within our team, across our organization, and with our clients
  • You are confident and credible to achieve consensus with both internal and external parties, with well-rounded communication skills to enable articulation of complex matters in straight-forward manner
  • You have strong ethics and integrity with a strong risk radar and dedicated approach to resolve issues
  • You have professional curiosity to identify and drive improvements and opportunities with a willingness to get into the detail and frame the solution
  • Strong analytical skills with advanced skills in Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Bloomberg
  • Strong aptitude for multi-tasking
  • Native-level proficiency in Japanese is essential for effective engagement and internal communication and fluency in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills is required to collaborate with internal global teams.
  • Knowledge of additional Asian language is a plus.
  • Passing JSDA Class-1 Sales Representative Examination is expected for this role.
