About the role

In your role as Investment Control Manager, you will make a meaningful and valued contribution from the outset.

This role will provide a great opportunity to work within the Investment Product Management (IPM) Team, with a focus on investment control and oversight.

The IPM Team represents the “voice of the client” within USSIM (the wholly owned investment manager and adviser to USS, the pension trustee company).

As a central function, the IPM Team is responsible for the oversight and governance of our investment mandates and execution. The team operates in the first line of defence but is separate from portfolio management and execution activities.

The scope of the role is broad, involving close collaboration with the investment desks, Responsible Investment team, Financial Risk team, Bloomberg team, Compliance team, and Operations team.

What you will be doing

As a trusted part of the Investment Product Management you will:

  • Work with a virtual team across investment desks, Financial Risk, execution, compliance, investment operations, and legal to design appropriate mandate guidelines and ensure monitoring controls (including Bloomberg coding) are appropriate.
  • Oversee daily monitoring of Bloomberg rules and work with other members of the IPM, Financial Risk and Bloomberg teams on any issues raised against controls (including Bloomberg coding) relating to mandate guidelines as well as assist with investigation and resolution of incidents raised.
  • Draft USSIM processes in relation to monitoring and oversight and respond to issues.
  • Drive continuous improvement and enhancement of policies and procedures, and robust governance processes.
  • Escalate issues as required to IPM management.
  • Assist with maintaining scheme legal and governance related documentation.
  • Chair and secretary for the Best Execution and Research Review Committee to help ensure committee effectiveness.
  • Own oversight of all aspects of Best Execution reporting and monitoring.
  • Oversee trade overrides and amendments.
  • Oversee breaches and waivers.
  • Implement of USS scheme-wide investment exclusions.
  • Oversee costs and charges over the internal and external mandates.

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Good technical investment knowledge, with good understanding of markets and regulatory environments
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to see the bigger picture and deliver high quality work under constrained timelines
  • Competency in prioritisation, process organisation, and management of multiple workstreams
  • Attention to detail, particularly when reviewing documents and analysis
  • High level of structure and organisation and the ability to work across teams
  • Pragmatism – ability to focus on key factors/ variables/ narratives as appropriate
  • Proficient at Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong compliance culture and high personal ethical standards
  • Strong stakeholder focus and ability to understand the relationships between USSIM, the pension scheme our members and stakeholders
  • Experience with Bloomberg terminal, and in particular with the VMGR and CMGR modules
